Winter in Finnish Lakeland is visiting the Winter Wonderland
In wintertime Finnish Lakeland turns into a Winter Wonderland with lots of winter fun activities for all family. Wintertime starts in November and last till end of March. By every cottage you can enjoy winter by yourself, but we offer also guided trips and share info about equipment rental in the area.
Even if Finland in wintertime is very exotic, it is safe and the roads are in good condition. In normal winter weather electricity and water supply works perfectly, as well as internet and mobiles. Winter storms are rare and typical degrees are between zero and -25 degrees. The air is dry and thus it doesn’t feel so cold. In fact, often -10 degrees feels warmer on your skin than +2 with moist wind. In January, February and March the ice on the lake is typically up to 60 cm thick. Please remember to ask the owner of the cottage if it is safe to walk on the ice.
Besides walking on the frozen lake, on the cottage yard and in the cottage surroundings you can try these activities by yourself: make a snowman and/or snow lantern, build a snow castle, enjoy the sled hill, make snow angels and try the Finnish kicksled.
Walking on the forest roads and in the forest is very relaxing and often even a magical experience. The snow quiet down all sounds and there is just a few bird species in the forest, such as great tit, Blue tit and different owls. If you see an animal, it is probably a rabbit in its white winter coat. In the forest you can get a feeling that the time has stopped. This experience could be described as nature’s own white forest therapy. There are many studies that forest has a healing effect on us humans.
Ice fishing is an Everyman’s right and you don’t need any fishing licenses. However, if you need hints, and a backpack of equipment for start, we recommend the Rock and Lake’s three hours Guided Ice Fishing trip. On this trip you learn how to do traditional Finnish wintertime fishing, but, of course, you can also try ice fishing by yourself. For many Finns ice fishing is a relaxing hobby since it is better that you just sit quiet on the seat and jerk with the fishing rod.
Typical winter activities in Finland are also cross country skiing, skating, downhill skiing and driving snowmobile. Equipment to these activities can be rented by ski resorts. Here contact and information:
